The history of my home country is wrought with hardship and arduous journeys full of occupation, assimilation, subjugation, dictatorship, and division. As a small country surrounded by giants, things were always precarious.
Looking at the K-pop and films coming out of present-day South Korea, it may not be obvious, but there are many societal impacts to having such a past. We have the highest suicide rate and the lowest birth rates in the world.
When I think about the times my grandparents and parents lived through, I feel that is reflected still in the way we gather. Here are a couple of graphite drawings I did based on modern-day interactions with friends transposed to the past.
The lines between the past and present are not so clear.
